A united and peaceful Europe, just as the former French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman did with his
Declaration of 9 May 1950:
"The contribution that an organised and living Europe can make to civilisation is indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations....
And he added: "Europe cannot be built in one fell swoop, nor can it be built by a simple summary: it will be built by concrete facts which first create a solidarity of action".
This solidarity of action presupposes a multitude of encounters between people living in Europe. The official town-twinning schemes serve this purpose, as do numerous private initiatives for encounters with other cultures. In this sense, borderless travel and peaceful coexistence are important pillars of a united Europe!
Through the cooperation of official bodies and private commitment, there is a new chance to give the spirit of Robert Schuman a perspective for the future.
This is also the spirit of the previous and planned activities of Wheels for Europe e.V., which originated in cooperation with the state capitals of Mainz and Wiesbaden and their German and European twin towns.
In the meantime, the district of Mainz-Bingen, the city of Bad Kreuznach and other organisations have joined in.
